Yum Cha (飲茶) by analogy, could be regarded as a Chinese styled morning or afternoon tea. This usually involves drinking Chinese Tea and eating Dim Sim dishes. Globally, the term Yum Cha and Dim Sim have been jointly used to refer to the type of meal or delicacy that is to be consumed. Despite the consistent usage of the terms, Dim Sims actually refer to the range of small dishes available, whilst Yum Cha refers to the entire meal customers consume with their Chinese Tea.

The varieties of today’s Dim Sims vary significantly; however usually consist of steamed and fried items, amongst other methods, and that are usually offered on heated ‘carts’ or ‘trolleys’ for customers to choose from. Dim Sims are usually small in size, with each basket or plate containing two to four pieces per dish, which is customary to share dishes amongst all diners on the same table. The size of the small portions allows diners to be able to try a wide variety of foods available.

Nowadays, due to the extent of Hong Kong and Cantonese people choosing to have yum cha as their priority lunch meal, many Yum Cha restaurants globally have changed their method of Dim Sim delivery. The traditional carts or trolleys filled with Dim Sims have been replaced with Dim Sim leaflet ordering systems. Indeed customers ordering their preferences for Dim Sims have significantly enabled restaurants to minimize their staffing costs, whilst increasing their table turnover rates.

Regardless of the advantages that result from customers playing a role in the servicing of Dim Sims from the Kitchen to their table, Top One has chosen to utilize the traditional carts, allowing its customers to be able to experience the satisfaction of being back at home or trying something completely new for many within Australia. Furthermore, Top One’s customers are also presented with a visual aspect of the Dim Sims, enabling customers to engage their visual senses.
